The plant
Bamboo is a grass — the largest in the world, and among the fastest-growing plants on the planet. It draws silicon from soil and deposits it throughout its structure, which is part of why a hollow stem can carry so much weight. No plant holds more silica.
Tabasheer, the traditional material
The traditional preparation is more specific than modern labels suggest. Tabasheer — also written banslochan — is a siliceous deposit that forms inside the hollow internodes of certain bamboo species. It was collected, traded along routes between India, Persia and China, and valued highly enough to be an article of commerce in its own right.
Ayurvedic and Unani practice used it for respiratory complaints, fevers and as a general tonic. Bamboo leaf preparations appear in Chinese practice for similar indications.
What does not appear anywhere in that record is use for memory or cognition.
What silicon does do
There is real biology here and it is worth stating accurately. Silicon has a documented role in connective tissue: collagen formation, bone, and the structural proteins holding tissue together. Jugdaohsingh's 2007 review is the usual reference, and it concerns bone health and dietary silicon intake.
Dietary silicon comes mostly from grains, beer, and some vegetables and water. It is not a nutrient most people are short of, and it is not one with a cognitive function attached.
What it does not do
There is no body of human research showing silica supplementation improves memory, attention or any cognitive measure. Not weak research — none. There is no trial to summarise, no effect size, no timeline.
We are saying that on a site selling a formula containing bamboo extract, which is deliberate. Our position is that a page telling you only the flattering half of each ingredient's story is not informing you, and the cheapest way to prove that is to say it where it costs something. The longer version is here.
How it is used today
- Where it is sold. Mostly in hair, skin, nail and bone products, which is where the research actually sits.
- Form. Bamboo stem extract standardised to a high silica content, typically 70% or above.
- Tolerance. Dietary silicon is well tolerated and present in ordinary food and water. No significant interactions are commonly reported at supplement amounts.
- In this formula. A mineral and structural contribution. That is the whole claim, and it is the accurate one.
